i wish i had a picture of the sky i saw on thursday night.
dad, collin, and i drove in the mini cooper with the top partially down from maryland, past washington dc, into virginia to stay the night before the funeral early the next morning.
i was reading the chronicles of narnia by c.s. lewis in the car, had finished the first book, the magician's nephew, about the time we crossed the state line into virginia. at this time the sun was setting over the trees in the west and my view from the passenger seat, head back, was breathtaking. you know those sun sets when the clouds in front of the sun are lined with gold? it was one of those. and as the clouds moved, i could see distinct rays of sun beaming back towards me. trying to draw the last bit of warmth from the sun's long day, all i could do was stare out my window in awe. it sounds cheesy, but considering the circumstances, tears just rolled down my cheeks. i breathed in deep breaths of sweet summer air, thankful for each one as i thought of the precious gift of life and how often i take it for granted.
i want to remember that moment forever.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
we stayed at my uncle frank's sister's house in stafford virginia and got up early to attend the private viewing. i thought it was strange that my aunt had decided to have a viewing considering the nature of his death (he was killed in an auto accident, late last saturday night, and was not wearing a seat belt).
but, somehow, i need to see. i need to stand there and face it. i need to watch his chest, waiting for it to rise, holding my own breath until it comes, and finally let it out knowing that was it. dead is dead is dead.
morbid post, i know, so i apologize for that.
but i just needed to put that out there.
and i think putting myself in the place of my aunt who lost her husband and my cousins who lost their father. how devastating that would be to lose the man i love. how heartbroken i would be to lose my father so early in his life.
ahhhhh anyway, life goes on. and i know God is in all this, i do.
so this weekend i worked! FINALLY!!!
and, p.s. it's great.
i'm working at the linganore winery in the tasting room. yesterday i ran the cash register and today i poured the wines (and yes, it is legal for me to pour being under 21, you must be 18 to serve, strange, i know). it's a pretty cool job, i love interacting with the people and i have some great coworkers and it never gets boring, there is always something to do.
i wasn't scheduled to work during this week at the winery :( but there is a possibility that i may live with my aunt Susie and her daughters for the next six weeks to help them get back on their feet. Frank did all the odd jobs and drove the girls to sports camps and did all that, so i may be stepping in to clean and run errands and whatnot.
being back in maryland has been good so far. i am excited to see where God is leading me this summer.
